Reef Shark Discovery Expedition

Departing Port Denarau at 7.30am for the spectacular Yasawa Islands, by 8.30am you’ll arrive at Kuata Island — welcomed with breakfast overlooking dramatic volcanic peaks rising from turquoise waters. This early departure unlocks something rare: 7.5 hours immersed in Kuata Island, its surrounding marine sanctuary and Fiji sharks!
During breakfast, you’ll meet your host for the day — one of Kuata Island’s in-house marine biologists — who will introduce you to the island’s ongoing shark conservation and research programme and outline the day’s shark-focused experiences
Reef Shark Discovery Expedition

Following a detailed safety briefing and snorkelling equipment fitting, you’ll depart for a nearby reef where a resident population of reef sharks patrol the clear, shallow waters. In depths of just 4 to 6 metres, Blacktip Reef Sharks (Carcharhinus melanopterus) and Whitetip Reef Sharks (Triaenodon obesus) cruise effortlessly around snorkellers, often passing within close proximity.
This is a rare opportunity to come face-to-face with sharks in their natural environment, observing their movement, behaviour and interactions across vibrant coral reefs. Guided by our qualified marine biologists, this experience goes beyond observation—offering real insight into shark ecology and the role these predators play in maintaining healthy reef systems.

Education & SSI Shark Ecology Certification
Following lunch, your marine biologist host delivers an engaging Shark Ecology session, exploring shark behaviour, ecosystem dynamics, predator-prey relationships and the critical role sharks play in maintaining reef resilience and ocean balance. Guests are then introduced to the SSI Shark Ecology programme, with certificates issued later in the afternoon — recognising your participation in a science-led marine conservation experience.

Introductory Dive with Reef Sharks
Before lunch, guests undertake a 45-minute introductory scuba training session in the resort pool.
Under professional instructor supervision, you’ll learn the fundamentals of scuba equipment, breathing techniques, underwater communication and safety procedures — preparing you for your open-water experience later in the afternoon. This structured session builds confidence and comfort before entering the ocean environment.

Under direct supervision from experienced dive professionals, you’ll descend into shallow reef habitat where Blacktip and Whitetip Reef Sharks are frequently encountered.
Calm, curious and non-aggressive, these reef sharks glide through coral formations, offering an immersive first scuba experience in a controlled and carefully managed environment.
This is not simply a “try dive,” but a guided shark encounter designed to connect new divers with the underwater world in a meaningful way. Following the dive, guests receive their SSI Shark Ecology Certificate, recognising participation in a marine conservation experience.

Later, enjoy time at leisure — snorkelling vibrant coral gardens directly from Kuata’s beachfront, relaxing on the sand, or simply absorbing the energy of the Yasawas. At 3.45pm, longboats transfer you to your return ferry, arriving back at Port Denarau at 6.00pm.
This is not simply a day cruise. It is a fully immersive marine expedition — combining adventure, science, conservation and meaningful impact in one extraordinary day in Fiji’s Yasawa Islands.
